Maybe it's a sign of how hard it is to tell loved ones you are unemployed, or maybe something else motivated the man charged this week with trespassing at Saxe Middle School. In any case, police say Oleh Shuplat asked his parents to drop him off in time for his job at the school. It turns out he doesn't work there. Or anywhere else for that matter.
Police say Shuplat, 24, of Carmel, N.Y., was dropped off at the school just before 7 a.m. Thursday by a relative as if he was going to work. Police said Shuplat entered the school but left shortly afterward, spending at places around town, including the New Canaan Library and Starbucks. Shuplat went back to Saxe at about 2:30 p.m. to be picked up.
Shuplat told TheDailyNewCanaan.com on Friday to say he will pay the $92 trespassing fine, but declined to elaborate on what happened.
"I was trespassing, I got a fine and I'll be paying it," he said.
Shuplat is a former town resident and a graduate of New Canaan High School, police said Friday. Shuplat was identified through video surveillance, which showed him walking in the school's halls prior to students arriving for class. Police and Saxe officials say students were never in danger.
Saxe Principal Greg Macedo sent a letter to parents Thursday afternoon advising them of an unidentified man in the building. The school arranged for additional staff supervision at the school's entrances and asked parents to report suspicious activity on campus. Because of the incident, increased supervision of the campus will remain in effect.
