NORWALK, Conn. The case of New Canaan resident and hit-and-run suspect Kate Regan has been put on a list to go to trial.
Norwalk Superior Court Judge Bruce Hudock decided Wednesday to place Regans case on the path to a possible trial. She is scheduled to return to court March 20, which could be the date for a jury to be selected. Regan, of Michigan Road, is charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and evading responsibility resulting in physical injury or death stemming from the death of Krishna S. Jayaraman on Aug. 18, 2010.
Regans attorney, John Gulash Jr., said the March 20 date is more to check the status of the case and to have a better idea of where other trials stand as well as possible scheduling issues. I think its really the same as any case. Its working its way through the process, Gulash said.
According to an official at the court clerks office, jury selection could start March 20, but its unlikely to occur. Gulash said the case could still possibly be resolved before a trial starts, though he did not comment on how optimistic he was about that happening.
New Canaan police arrested Regan on Nov. 3, 2010. Police found Jayaraman, 82, lying on the side of Oenoke Ridge just after 4:40 p.m. Aug. 18, suffering from serious injuries. Jayaraman died less than two hours later at Norwalk Hospital.
Police said Regan was driving a 2008 Infiniti QX56 when she struck him. Investigators from the State Police Major Crime Unit and forensic technicians were also called in to work on the investigation. Police Chief Ed Nadriczny had asked state police to expedite the investigation.
Regan and her husband, Michael, are also facing a civil suit from Jayaramans family in Stamford Superior Court.
