Republican Registrar of Voters Robert Shafter, deputy Debbie Lyon and voting moderators Beverly Abinanti and Jack Messert were hard at work Monday, preparing for today's primaries. In just less than 90 minutes, they and their counterparts at Saxe Middle School had everything ready.
District 1 and 2 residents vote at the high school gymnasium at 11 Farm Road. District 3 voters head to Saxe Middle School's old gym at 468 South Ave. If unsure of your voting district, check the town's website. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Shafter said that despite the usual rush of about 50 unaffiliated voters joining parties before the deadline, he doesn't expect turnout to be high. "It's August," he said. "A lot of people go away." Still, the town clerk had collected 228 absentee ballots before Monday.
New Canaan's 6,049 registered Republicans can vote in six races. For governor, Michael Fedele, Tom Foley and Oz Griebel are on the ballot. Their potential running mates are Lisa Wilson-Foley and Mark Boughton.
Linda McMahon, Rob Simmons and Peter Schiff are vying for the nomination for the U.S. Senate race. Dan Debicella, Rick Torres and Rob Merkle are running to oppose Jim Himes for the 4th district Congressional seat. For attorney general, Martha Dean is facing Ross Garber. And Republicans in New Canaan and Darien will vote for the likely winner for two towns' newly combined probate court, between Darien's John Ryan or Michael Murray or New Canaan's Bill Osterndorf.
New Canaan's 2,582 Democrats vote in four races. For governor, Ned Lamont faces Dan Malloy, with Nancy Wyman and Mary Messina Glassman looking to be the lieutenant governor candidate. For comptroller, Kevin Lembo and Michael Jarjura compete. Gerry Garcia and Denise Merrill are in the race for secretary of the state.
