Police: Woman Left Scene of New Canaan Rollover

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A Norwalk woman accused of crashing her vehicle after reading a text message on her phone is facing several charges from New Canaan police.

Meghan Hamilton, 30, of Algonquin Road, is charged with evading responsibility, a misdemeanor, and motor vehicle violations of texting while driving, distracted driving and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Police received a report of an overturned vehicle just after 7 a.m. Saturday. Police found an empty 2005 Volvo sport-utility vehicle off New Norwalk Road and eventually contacted Hamilton. Police said Hamilton told them she was driving south at about 2 a.m. when she received a text message and lost control of the vehicle. The SUV went off the right side of the road, struck a guiderail on the left side of the road, went down an embankment and struck a tree and the base of a Connecticut Light & Power pole before coming to a stop upside down. Hamilton was not injured but did not report the accident to police and was picked up by her husband. Police said no alcohol was found in the vehicle.

Hamilton was released on $260 bond and is scheduled to appear Dec. 15 in Norwalk Superior Court.
