Police: Wilton Pair Tried to Take New Canaan Flag

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A member of the Wilton High School wrestling team and another teenager were arrested Saturday in New Canaan after police said they tried to steal a flag from a New Canaan High School press box.

Matthew G. Hill, 18, of Pheasant Run Road, and a 17-year-old were charged with third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny on Saturday afternoon. Police said the males were seen breaking into the press box at New Canaan High School’s Dunning Field. Police said the boys, who were wearing Wilton High School wrestling apparel, entered the press box through an open window and attempted to take a black and red New Canaan High Rams flag.

The Wilton High wrestling team was at New Canaan High for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Tournament. Hill is listed as a member of the team on an independent Wilton wrestling site.

Wilton High Athletic Director Christy Hayes had no comment when contacted Monday afternoon.

Hill and the 17-year-old were both released on promises to appear in Norwalk Superior Court. Hill is scheduled to appear on Feb. 23 and the 17-year-old is set to appear on Feb. 22.
