The theft of more than $7,000 from the New Canaan Diner is under investigation by town police.
According to police, someone broke into a locked safe at the Forest Street restaurant between 10:55 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday and took about $7,000. Police said someone entered from a closed but unlocked window to get to the safe. The safe was not damaged. The restaurant also had lost money a day earlier, police said, when someone removed $300 to $500 from a cashier's machine.
Police said the restaurant's management did not report the first theft until the theft from the safe occurred.
