Police: Man Posed as Treasury Official

Town police were investigating a case of attempted fraud in which someone illegally posed as a state treasury department official. Police said someone contacted a 45-year-old West Cross Road man last Tuesday, saying he had unclaimed property belonging to the complainant and would help him claim it for a 10 percent finder's fee.

The West Cross Road man believed it was a scam and asked the caller for more information but received only a cell phone number. A few days later, the man received a letter from the caller, requesting personal information, including his driver's license number and Social Security number. The man did not provide the information and later contacted police. Police said no one at the state treasury had contacted the complainant.
