Legendary singer/songwriter Paul Simon will be the special guest performer at a fundraiser to benefit Stamford Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 6. The New Canaan resident will sing many of his Grammy Award-winning hits in an acoustical show at the annual Dream Ball at Tully Health Center, 32 Strawberry Hill Court, Stamford.
Simon has long held an interest in health-care access, especially for children, said Dream Ball co-chair Kathy Sachs.
Though Simon is famous as half of the groundbreaking Simon and Garfunkel singing duo as well as for his artistic innovations as a solo performer, his health-care philanthropic activities don't attract the same kind of spotlight. One of Simon's charitable initiatives is the Children's Health Fund, an organization he cofounded in 1987 that provides mobile medical vans to poor children in rural and urban areas throughout the United States. To date, it has provided 2 million doctor/patient visits, including service to communities devastated by Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina.
"We're very fortunate that Paul Simon's going to come. He donated his evening to come and sing for us," said Sachs, who planned the event with co-chairs Carol Fedele and Paula Callari, along with a committee of two-dozen members.
The annual hospital fundraiser, now in its sixth year, has featured other well-known supporters last year, NBC News anchor Brian Williams was the celebrity headliner but the main focus is the hospital and its work, said Sachs.
"The attraction has been really to celebrate the hospital," she said. Last year, nearly $800,000 was raised.
The black tie gala will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails, a silent auction and giving tree. Dinner and dancing begin at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets cost $350 per person. Tables of 10 are available for group sponsorships ranging from $5,000 to $25,000.
