New Canaan residents and visitors whose commutes have been slowed by the traffic on Old Norwalk Road, should be glad to know that the reconstruction of the bridge is going according to schedule and should end by its December deadline.
Construction crews are reconstructing the bridge's deck circles and abutments. "The previous bridge that was in here was in serious need of replacement," the foreman of the construction project, Dan Brown, said. They are just about ready to put down the new abutments, build the new bridge deck surface and build half of the bridge.
To be in position to do this, they first had to remove half of the superstructure. Of course, they also needed to cut off one of the lanes of Old Norwalk Road in order to have a work area that accommodates them. There are currently two new stop lights directing traffic to avoid accidents and confusion for people passing by the site.
"When you live next to a bridge that old, at some point it is going to need repairs," Brown said, "It does not last forever." He added that most motorists and residents understood the need for the repairs, as well as the necessary sacrifices to get the job done.
There were attempts to contact P.E. Director of Public Works Michael P. Pastore, but he did not return them.
