No School Tuesday; Trick-or-Treating is Saturday

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Widespread power outages will force New Canaan schools to remain closed Tuesday and Halloween trick-or-treating to take place Saturday.

Town Emergency Management Director Michael Handler said damage from Saturday’s snowstorm remained extensive and he was unsure when power would be restored. Conditions on several streets forced New Canaan Public Schools to remain closed for classes and all activities. Tuesday’s closure will exhaust New Canaan’s original slate of snow days, though the Board of Education recently moved ahead the year-end closing date to June 21 to pick up more days.

Downed trees and power lines have forced town residents to move townwide trick-or-treating to Saturday, though New Canaan Town Hall and the Outback Teen Center will have Halloween activities from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday.

Handler said the top priority is restoring power to residents and the initial focus will be along Route 123, upper Elm Street, Heritage Hill Road and Jelliff Mill road. Circuits in those places, he said, support more than 1,000 homes.

Lapham Community Center remained open as an emergency shelter and the New Canaan YMCA was available for residents to take showers. The New Canaan Library was still available for charging phones and other devices as well as for Wi-Fi Internet connection.

Handler said emergency officials have received a large number of calls about carbon monoxide and that residents using generators should be extra careful.
