New Voters Can Sign Up on Saturday

Residents hoping to vote in the Nov. 2 election will have a chance to register Saturday. The town registrar's office will have a special voter registration session from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Town Hall, 77 Main St. Democratic Registrar George Cody said the extra hours are for people who have not had the chance to register on weekdays because of work or other commitments.

"It's an opportunity for people to come in who can't come during regular business hours," said Cody, who is on the ballot for another term as registrar. "It's state law, and it's always done with every election."

The Saturday hours usually don't draw big crowds, Cody said, especially with registration forms now available on the Internet. But Cody said it's important to give potential voters a chance to sign up.

"We always want a high turnout. It's better for the system," he said. "The more people that vote, the better. We try to make it as accessible as possible."

Voters may register by mail until Tuesday. The deadline for in-person registration is noon Tuesday, Oct. 26.

Cody and Republican Registrar Robert Shafter are running unopposed for re-election Nov. 2. The only contested town race is for probate judge as Republican Michael Murray faces independent challenger Christopher McClancy for the combined Darien-New Canaan Probate Court.

Residents will also vote on several statewide races, including the governor's race between Democrat Dan Malloy and Republican Tom Foley and the U.S. Senate rate pitting Democratic state attorney general Richard Blumenthal against Republican Linda McMahon, former president of World Wrestling Entertainment.
