NEW CANAAN, Conn. Linda Cappello and Elizabeth Hauck thought Tuesday was a fine day to get some fresh vegetables. The friends picked up Swiss chard, celeriac and soup all by taking a walk through the greenhouse at New Canaan Nature Center.
In the middle of winter, it lets you know spring is right around the corner, said Hauck, who lives in Norwalk and works in New Canaan.
Thats part of why many people stopped in at the Nature Center for the first winter session of the New Canaan Farmers Market. It was a town tradition, taking place a little earlier than usual.
Dozens of people in search of veggies, tea, soap or just a hint of warm weather visited the 11 area vendors at the market. Organizers held the winter market to give vendors another opportunity to sell their wares and to market the nature center during the winter.
Market Master Lexi Gazy, who also runs the traditional summer market, said she liked the turnout Tuesday and is hopeful more people will come for the next three winter market sessions, set for noon to 3 p.m. on the next three Tuesdays.
Its been excellent. Its been good all day, Gazy said Everyone is happy. The market has loyal customers from the summer market and lot of families brought their preschool children out.
Arthur Rein, deli manager for Walter Stewarts Market, agreed that Tuesday was a good day. The Stewarts table offered sandwiches, soups and other natural fare. Theyre glad weve come, Rein said.
So was Debbie Prutting of New Canaan, who picked up soup, a chicken pot pie and tea for the day. I got very excited when I heard about it, Prutting said. To see them in the winter months is kind of nice.
