NEW CANAAN, Conn. Assistant New Canaan Fire Chief John Hennessey will never forget the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001.
We still think about it like it was yesterday, said Hennessey, speaking for the towns emergency responders. To us, it feels like it was yesterday.
So Hennessey and many of the other emergency responders will be on hand for the towns annual remembrance service, starting at 9:45 a.m. outside Vine Cottage on Main Street. Town officials will join with residents to pause and remember the almost 3,000 victims of the terrorist attacks on New York City, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, Pa. Three New Canaan residents died in the attacks.
First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III and Police Chief Edward Nadriczny will speak during the brief ceremony.
The ceremony will also feature the laying of a wreath in front of a new Sept. 11 memorial in front of the New Canaan Fire Department.
New Canaan firefighters, led by Capt. Mike Socci, and crews from the New Canaan Public Works Department placed the memorial in front of the firehouse on Main Street. It features the 1,400-pound beam that was once part of the first tower in the World Trade Center. It also has four steel doves, representing the four planes hijacked and crashed by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001, and a pentagon-shaped base, representative of the nations main military building that was hit by one of the airliners. Firefighters recently added a flagpole to the tower and plan to install a plaque in the future with a description of the artifact.
While attendance of the ceremony has dropped in recent years, Hennessey says its important to take a day to honor the people and remember the event that changed so many lives. Its something we have to do. We need to do it, he said.
