NEW CANAAN, Conn. Long-needed renovations at New Canaan Town Hall could start early next year, and town employees will begin moving out of the main building this summer, according to a timeline drafted by Public Works Director Mike Pastore.
Pastore unveiled the proposed timeline on the Town Hall work Tuesday before the newly created Town Hall Building Committee.
First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III said the town should pull its ideas from the recently submitted Long Range Planning Committee proposals and recommendations from another report prepared several years ago rather than hiring a firm to develop another plan. The committee will also have to hire an architect to draft its plans.
I think the goal is to come up with a hybrid, the best of both, so to speak, and say to the architect, Heres the direction we want to go in, Pastore said. There are major differences in the plans on the size of the auditorium and how many departments should use Town Hall when construction is finished.
Departments in Town Hall will be relocated in stages beginning this summer to rental space in the downtown area and the second floor of the New Canaan Police Department headquarters on South Avenue. The town clerks office may move in July or August to be ready for the general election in November, Pastore said. The tax collectors office and administrative offices will leave by November.
The decision to renovate Town Hall became more urgent after officials discovered a boiler in its basement was not working, making the building unsuitable for use in colder months.
