New Canaan Study Group Unveils Downtown Options

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Possible zoning changes to downtown New Canaan will be discussed Tuesday evening when the Market Demand Study Committee presents its recommendations.

The committee will meet with merchants and other town business people at 5 p.m. at Town Hall. The panel will also unveil its findings at a special Planning and Zoning Committee public hearing starting at 6:30 p.m. Study consultants BFJ Planning will be on hand to answer questions from residents.

Town Planner Steven Kleppin said suggestions made at community meetings included changing some zoning rules through the Planning and Zoning Commission and investigating strategies with attractions like the Philip Johnson Glass House, the New Canaan Nature Center and the Silvermine Arts Center to market the town more effectively as a day-trip destination.

The full report, executive summary and consumer and retail surveys can be viewed in the planning and zoning office at Irwin Park or downloaded from the town’s website.
