New Canaan Slightly More Diverse, Census Shows

New Canaan is slightly more populated and more diverse than it was 10 years ago, according to recently released Census information.

The town’s population in the 2010 U.S. Census is 19,738, an increase of 343 from 2000. The number of Hispanics, however, has surged to 570 from 338 and now counts for nearly 3 percent of the overall population.

More Asians are also calling New Canaan home. Census figures show 663 residents of Asian descent, an increase of 218 from 10 years before. Asians now account for 3.4 percent of the town’s population. Only New Canaan's African-American population is down, from 201 in 2000 to 197 last year.
