NEW CANAAN, Conn. Groups that want to place ribbons downtown for awareness campaigns will be allowed to use lampposts for only two weeks a month.
The Board of Selectmen voted Tuesday to approve new rules for ribbon placement in the main shopping area. From now on, campaigns will get to place their ribbons on lampposts on Main Street between Locust Avenue and Cherry Street and on Elm Street between Main and Park streets for only two weeks a month. Ribbons will not be allowed on trees or street sign poles, said Administrative Officer Tom Stadler.
It just looks better and more consistent, said Stadler, who also noted that ribbons tied around trees or street signs are more apt to fall to the ground.
Only one campaign can place ribbons on the lampposts in a given month, Stadler said. After 14 days, the ribbons should be taken down, he said.
Purple ribbons are currently in place for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Town officials adjusted the rules after New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy said some residents complained that they dont always know what certain ribbons are for and that they can become unsightly if they fall to the ground.
