NEW CANAAN, Conn. Whether they have sharp curves, intersections that are tough to navigate or are filled with drivers who dont accommodate pedestrians, some roads have been labeled as dangerous by New Canaan residents.
The junction of Main Street and Farm Road, not far from Saxe Middle School, is an issue for Leonaura Rhodes. She sees a tricky four-way intersection with stop signs set too far back from the junction, making it difficult to see traffic at other stop signs.
There are frequently two or three vehicles entering the junction at the same time, Rhodes said. I have seen several near misses. The solution appears to be moving the four stop signs and lines as close as possible to the junction.
Rhodes said she is also worried about Putnam and White Oak Shade roads. It can be difficult when trying to make a turn onto White Oak Shade, which becomes Main Street when heading north toward downtown, she said.
You can't see the traffic coming along White Oak Shade when you pull out, she said.
George McEvoy sees Frogtown Road as a problem. The street is narrow, windy and hilly road, McEvoy said, noting that drivers routinely exceed the posted 25 mph limit.
McEvoy is more concerned with the speed of drivers on South Avenue near the New Canaan YMCA. McEvoy hopes the town highway department or the state Department of Transportation can install a crosswalk for pedestrians going to the YMCA from New Canaan High School.
Everyone has to make a run for it across the road, he said. Theres a lot of cars speeding and they dont to give a darn about people crossing the street.
