New Canaan Prom Scheme Earns High Marks

The way New Canaan High School senior Jack Bennett asked Blaire Cutler to be his prom date might seem cruel to some. But to Jack it was downright perfect.

“It was beautiful,” the 18-year-olld Bennett said with a hearty laugh as he recalled giving Blaire the thrill/shock of her life. In hindsight, the 15-year-old sophomore admits it was pretty good as well.

Almost a month ago, Jack asked Principal Tony Pavia to play a role in his creative scheme. Blaire was called to Pavia’s office on April 28 to talk about her classroom performance. When she arrived, Pavia told her he was concerned about her grades and her classroom attendance.

Cutler, who had missed several days of school while on vacation, immediately feared the worst, especially because of the stern look on Pavia’s face. “I thought I was going to wind up in summer school,” she said. “I thought no way was this a joke.”

Pavia then gave her a piece of paper outlining the concerns. At the bottom was Jack's prom question. After getting over her initial shock, Blaire accepted.

“I give it a 10. I wasn’t expecting it at all,” she said.

The trick caught Blaire even more by surprise because Jack had told her to look out for a surprise on April 29. The day of his request, the 28th, was Jack's birthday. “She had no idea,” he said.

The date set, Jack is now getting ready to get the matching corsage and boutonnière the couple will wear to Friday's prom. It’s a relatively new experience for him having spent part of his youth in England, where proms are not part of the culture.
