NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaan police are warning residents to be alert for a possible chimney-cleaning scam.
The warning was prompted by an incident in Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y. Police said a representative of All-Season Chimney called an elderly woman and offered to clean her fireplace for $49. Once the woman agreed, two men arrived at her home, gave her their names and a client identification number and went to check on two fireplaces. Police said the men told the woman her chimneys needed repairs costing about $5,000. She eventually paid about $1,900 for a chimney liner and caps after the workers had been in her home for an hour. The woman later called her oil company and a reputable chimney company and was told that no work had been done.
Police said residents should be wary whenever they receive a phone call from a company offering to do work and should do their own research on the company before committing to have any one come to their home.
