New Canaan Police Probe Phony Money Orders

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan police are looking into who tried to trick a Mead Street man into sending money to the Philippines.

The resident contacted police last Tuesday after he received counterfeit money orders, police said. He had been told of the opportunity to become a mystery shopper, police said.

The man received an overnight delivery via FedEx asking him for his opinion on Western Union services. Included in the delivery were two fraudulent postal money orders, which he was asked to deposit into a bank account and then send a portion of that money to an address in the Philippines. No money was sent, police said.

The following incidents were also reported by police:

• Rebecca Young, 39, of Country Club Road West, was charged Sunday with risk of injury to a minor, a felony. At 1:24 p.m., a woman who lives on Country Club Road called and told polcie she had seen a 4-year-old girl who lives next door wander into her yard alone. Police arrived and tried to make contact with someone in the 4-year-old’s residence. Police said they found three other children, ages 1 ½, 10 and 13, in the home and that the 13-year-old was unaware that his sister was missing. Police said Young was at church and told officers that a babysitter was supposed to arrive at 2 p.m. Young was released on a promise to appear May 29 in Norwalk Superior Court.

• Roshawn Wallace, 21, of Chicago, turned himself over to police last Wednesday and was charged with failure to pay or plead, a misdemeanor. Police said the arrest stems from Wallace’s arrest May 9, 2011, on a charge of soliciting without a permit, a misdemeanor. Police said Wallace failed to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Nov. 14. Wallace was released on $250 bond and is scheduled to appear May 29 in Norwalk Court.

• Ryan Shullman, 19, of Middle Ridge Road, was charged last Thursday with two counts each of third-degree assault and disorderly conduct as well as one count of criminal mischief, all misdemeanors. Police said the arrest stems from a family dispute and altercation that took place at 1:13 a.m. last Wednesday between Shullman and his parents at their home. Police said Shullman was not home when officers arrived.  Police said both parents sustained minor injuries. Shullman had broken a window and kicked or punched a hole in a wall, police said. Shullman turned himself in Thursday afternoon. He appeared last Friday in Norwalk Superior Court.
