NEW CANAAN, Conn. Century-old roofs at several town buildings are in need of extensive repairs or replacement, Public Works Director Mike Pastore said.
Theyre old, said Pastore. These buildings go back to the early 1900s.
Work on four buildings may start as soon as spring. The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday endorsed a $1.3 million bonding project to install synthetic slate roofing at the nature centers education building and visitors center; fix the roof, windows and exterior walls at the New Canaan Police Department; and repair the roof of the Powerhouse Theatre in Waveny Park. The police headquarters, built in 1926, is the newest of those buildings.
Last winter was a hard winter, especially on slate roofs, Pastore said. They need at the very least repairs.
The Board of Finance approved bonding the project, but it still needs an OK from the Town Council next month to allow the Public Works Department to get engineering for the project. When [residents] see the pictures and see that the roofs are 100 years old, I hope they will say that something needs to be done, Pastore said.
Public Works initially planned to ask for $3 million and include repairs to New Canaan Town Hall and Waveny House. Pastore said he wanted to do a more extensive review of what is necessary at Waveny House and will wait to see what the Long Range Planning Committee has in store for Town Hall, which needs extensive repairs to its roof, windows, and heating and air-conditioning systems. It also needs to meet federal Americans With Disability Act upgrades. Long-range planners are considering huge Town Hall renovations, including constructing a new building on Cherry Street.
