“Instead of a solo act, we are a choir this year,” said Laura Heckman, the New Canaan Nature Center's executive director.

It’s the first time organizations in the community have worked together on Earth Day activities, she said.

Joining the Nature Center are the: Town of New Canaan, the Garden Club, New Canaan Parks, Highway and Public Works, Saxe Middle School, the Land Trust, the YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, Conservation Commission, the town’s Inland Wetlands & Watercourses, the Library and Pesticide Free New Canaan.

The newly opened Mrs. Green’s Market and Aetheria Relaxation Spa are also involved, Heckman said. The theme of this year’s events is: “Earth Day Who Cares? We All Do.”

The Town of New Canaan Earth Day Proclamation will occur at noon at the Visitor’s Center at the Nature Center. It is located at 144 Oenoke Ridge.

The events for Earth Day started last week with workshops on recycling materials at the library on Tuesday and Saturday.

Most of the events will occur Tuesday, but a special event Wednesday at the library will feature geologist and conservationist G. Warfield “Skip” Hobbs delivered a lecture titled “The Future of Planet Earth.”

The events, which finish with a spring celebration hike on Saturday evening at the Nature Center, were created to attract and interest as many people as possible, Heckman said.

“We are going to go where people are,” she said.
