NEW CANAAN, Conn. Visitors to the New Canaan Library will soon have an easier time making a stop: more parking spaces are on the way.
Crews from FGB Construction have started to transform a space off South Avenue and Maple Street into room for 23 new parking spaces for the library. The project is expected to be finished by the end of October, Library Executive Director Alice Knapp said.
Were very excited to move forward with this, said Knapp, who said she has been the recipient of thanks and high-fives from visitors who see the construction under way. The expansion will include two additional handicapped spaces, doubling the current amount.
So far, its been a gloriously painless project, Knapp said.
The lack of available parking has been the biggest gripe of many library patrons. The library currently has 49 parking spaces, and many of those spots are filled quickly, especially in the hours after schools are finished with classes, Knapp said. Those who cant find parking on the library campus usually park on Main Street right outside of the library or in free spaces outside of the Morse Court parking lot.
The library will use a portion of the $2 million bequest left by former volunteer James Creedon as well as proceeds from the Books, Blues and BBQ fundraiser held last summer. The project will include paving the existing lots.
The new parking lot is not part of the librarys long-planned renovation project, Knapp said. Library officials are still working to find a way to upgrade the Main Street building. Its too early to say when the shovels will be in the ground. Its at the great unknown stage, she said. There are so many variables.
