NEW CANAAN, Conn. Two town commissions will host public hearings on back-to-back days to consider an plan to build homes on the old Jelliff Mill property.
The towns Inland Wetlands Commission will have a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Monday to consider a request by 47 Jelliff Mill LLC and Bryan and Cheryl Gardiner to demolish the warehouse and neighboring single-family home near the now closed mill. Town Planner Steven Kleppin said the developers want to build 11 townhouses and five condominiums that, under state law, would be considered "affordable housing."
The Planning and Zoning Commission will have a hearing on the plan during its meeting, starting at 7 p.m., Tuesday. Both meetings will be at New Canaan Town Hall.
Previously, the mill property owners wanted to transform the building into offices, but those plans were opposed by neighbors in 2010.
Neither board is expected to make a quick decision on the plan, Kleppin said.
It will take several meetings, he said.
The original Jelliff Mill was built alongside Jelliff Mill Pond in the early 18th century. When a fire destroyed the building in 1949, the owners at the time replaced it with a concrete building. The neighborhood surrounding the building now is zoned as residential, but the mill itself was grandfathered in and allowed to operate as an industrial property.
