New Canaan Hears Proposals On Town Hall Renovation

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — New Canaan's Town Hall renovation project took a step closer to becoming a reality Monday night when the committee overseeing the effort listened to presentations by two architectural firms.

Representatives of KSQ Architects of White Plains and Perkins Eastman of New York City appeared before the six-member committee at an executive session. Details of the presentations — and discussions about them — were not disclosed.

The 103-year-old building, located on Main Street in the heart of downtown, is in dire need of a renovation, following the failure of its boiler this past winter. The mishap has necessitated moving staffers before cold weather arrives later this year.

Plans call for the construction of a new auditorium to accommodate 75 to 200 people, or more, and a new interior office layout sufficient for existing staff and up to an additional 40 people. The town also wants to technologically update the facility with new audio/visual and Internet capabilities.

The two architectural firms have extensive experience designing public buildings. Perkins Eastman designed the new state Superior Court complex in Stamford, while KSQ designed the new science wing for the Rye City School District in Rye, N.Y.

First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III, one of the members of the building committee, said no decision was made on which architectural firm to hire. He said the committee will question both in coming weeks.

"The committee felt the two presentations both met our expectations," Mallozzi said. "We were very pleased with the thoroughness and depth of the presentations."
