NEW CANAAN, Conn. If the southern end of Main Street gets sidewalks, the New Canaan Fire Commission would prefer they be on the east side of the sharp curve near Woodland Road.
Curbs on the west side would make it difficult for cars to pull over to make way for emergency vehicles, according to Roger Williams, Fire Commission chair.
Williams endorsed hard curbs on the east side of Main Street after hearing a report from Bridgeport-based Cabezas & DeAngelis. The firm is drafting plans for the Department of Public Works in case the town decides to build the sidewalks.
Williams said the commission has yet to offer its opinion on sidewalk placement for the rest of south Main Street. Several residents have petitioned the town to install sidewalks from Oak Street to Farm Road for the safety of walkers. Residents voted in April not to stop a $4 million town road improvement project that might include sidewalks.
On Wednesday, the Town Council will hear a presentation that includes drawings and cost estimates for sidewalk installation on the east and west sides of Main Street. A hearing is expected next week to receive public comments.
Public Works Director Mike Pastore said Monday he is leaning toward recommending sidewalks on the east side of Main Street but wants to hear the projected costs and public comments. The plusses and minuses will have to be laid out, he said.
