New Canaan Finance Board Starts Budget Review

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III will not be looking to make cuts to any specific town department when the Board of Finance takes up New Canaan's proposed 2012-13 municipal budget Tuesday.

The finance board starts its review of the selectmen’s $129.9 million spending plan Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall. Mallozzi is also chairman of the Board of Finance. 

Last week, the Board of Selectmen finished its review of the budget, reducing it to $129.9 million from $132.8 million. The proposal now represents a 6.8 percent increase from current spending. The selectmen removed $2.1 million, the bulk of it for capital projects, including $610,000 to replace a fire department pumper truck and $60,000 for a new police vehicle.

Mallozzi said he’s not planning to target any specific department in order to get the  increase down to 2.5 percent, a goal he set prior to the start of the budget building process. “The total budget is up for review,” Mallozzi said Monday. “I don’t want to prejudge the budget."

“It’s all up for discussion over the next three to four weeks,” he said. “Now the Board of Finance has it, and we’ll go from there.” Once the finance board is finished making its proposed changes, the budget moves to the Town Council for final review.

Mallozzi said the budget process has gone well so far. All three major town boards  heard presentations from municipal departments earlier this month to prepare their members.
