New Canaan Elections Are All But Decided

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Campaign fervor will likely pass New Canaan this year because most of the town’s major races are all but decided.

Republican and Democratic Party caucuses held in July basically confirmed who will take office next year. Only the race for treasurer, between incumbent Republican V. Donald Hersam and Democratic nominee Kathleen Corbet, is expected to generate any buzz.

Selectman Robert Mallozzi III is running unopposed for first selectman in November. Mallozzi defeated Board of Finance member Paul Giusti for the Republican nod for the town’s top office. The Democrats chose not to nominate a first selectman candidate.

Mallozzi’s selectman post is set to be filled by Board of Education Chairman Nick Williams, who defeated John Engel for the GOP nod. For the Democrats, Town Councilwoman Beth Jones was nominated to run in the general election. Jones will take over for Selectman Sally Hines, who opted not to seek another term.

Town Clerk Claudia Weber will run unopposed for another term, staving off a challenge in July for the GOP nomination from Jennifer Prudy

Republicans will have incumbent Hazel Hobbs, former Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman Scott Gress and Gene Goodman seeking seats on the Board of Education. The fourth available seat is set to be filled by Alison Bedula, running as the lone Democratic candidate.

Republican incumbents Kenneth Campbell, Steve Karl and Tucker Murphy will be joined by former Fire Commission Chairman Roger Williams in seeking seats on the Town Council. The Democrats will have John Emert, who joined the council earlier this year, and Joseph Paladino.

Wendy Fog will be the lone Democrat running for the Board of Assessment Appeals. Katherine Markiewicz and Patrick McLevey will run as Republicans to claim the other two assessment appeals seats.

Eight candidates are running for seven town constable spots. Republicans will have Austin Furst, Gregory Pepe, John Ponterotto and Van Young on the ticket. Democrats will field Ed Vollmer and Nick Mitrakis, and Cynthia Franco. Hector Lopez will run as the sole Green Party representative.

Note: An earlier version of this story did not include Democratic constable candidate Cynthia Franco. We apologize for the error.
