NEW CANAAN, Conn. Beth Jones is excited to be the flag bearer for the Democrats in the upcoming town election, even though her party will face off against Republicans in only one race.
The New Canaan Democratic Town Committee selected its field of candidates Monday to run in the fall general election. Jones, a member of the Town Council, was selected by a gathering of Democrats to run for a seat on the Board of Selectmen, where she is expected to replace Sally Hines as the lone Democrat.
I am very excited about our whole slate. We have a fabulous group, and its going to be a lot of fun, Jones said. I think almost everybody weve got on our slate feels that way.
Democratic voters opted not to appoint a first selectman candidate, all but clearing the way for Republican nominee and current selectman Robert Mallozzi III to succeed Jeb Walker when his term expires at the end of the year. Mallozzi defeated Board of Finance member Paul Giusti in last weeks Republican Party caucus.
Jones said she would have loved to run with Hines had she decided to run for first selectman, but understands Hines' decision to not seek another term.
The rest of the ticket also went as was recommended by the Democratic Town Committee two months ago. Kathleen Corbet was selected to run for town treasurer, where she will challenge Republican incumbent and newspaper publisher V. Donald Hersam.
Corbet said she respects Hersams contributions to New Canaan but is running to offer a new approach to the position. In remarks to her fellow Democrats, Corbet said she wanted to bring accountability, responsibility and transparency to the town treasurer position.
As your next town treasurer, I pledge to be actively engaged in fulfilling each of these responsibilities for all citizens across New Canaan, she said.
Wendy Fog is the only Democratic candidate for the Board of Assessment and Appeals, where she will seek a third term. Alison Bedula will seek a third term on the Board of Education.
John Emert and Joe Paladino will run for the Town Council seats. Emert was appointed to the Town Council earlier this year to replace Johnny Potts, who died last February. Paladino will seek the position that will be vacated by Jones.
Cindy Franco, Nick Mitrakis and Ed Vollmer were selected to run town constable positions.
