NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- In Fairfield County, New Canaan is becoming a sort of leader in providing affordable housing, thanks to the efforts of Hobbs Inc., a third-generation New Canaan homebuilder, according to The New York Times.

Run by Scott Hobbs, who is also chairman of the New Canaan Housing Authority, the company has built some of the most outstanding homes in the area, winning awards and framed articles attesting to the company's work. But now, Hobbs is working on what may be his hardest project to date, the Millport Apartments, an affordable housing complex for the city of New Canaan, said the Times.

When undertaking the effort, Hobbs said the affordable housing should mix in with the area's existing homes, where the average home cost more than $1 million, according to the Times.

The homes are required by a 1990 state law meant to reverse years of housing discrimination across the state, added The New York Times.
