Man Reports $62K in Items Missing After Move From New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A New Canaan reported the theft last Tuesday of more than $62,000 in items, including four guns, as he was moving from Summer Street to a new home in Norwalk.

The man's belongings were picked up by a moving company Nov. 16 and taken to a storage facility in the Bronx, N.Y., while he was planning to move out of state, police said. But he instead moved to Norwalk.

When the man did an inventory at his new residence, he discovered several items were missing, including a pair of Winchester rifles valued at $750 and $4,500, a Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle with a scope valued at $2,500 and a Sauer shotgun valued at $2,000, police said. The man may file a civil court case against the moving company, police said.

The following items also were reported by New Canaan Police:

• Freddie Parker, 62, of Chestnut Street, Norwalk, was charged last Thursday with drinking alcohol while operating a vehicle, a misdemeanor, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle. Parker was pulled over for driving with an expired registration at about 5:52 p.m. as he was traveling south on New Norwalk Road, police said. The officer noticed an open beer can in a plastic bag in Parker’s car when he asked for a license and registration. The beer can was cold and half full, police said. Parker is set to appear June 5 in Norwalk Superior Court.

• Grzegorz Kowalski, 26, of Custer Street, Stamford, was charged Friday with driving under the influence after police found him in the parking area for the Talmadge Hill Metro-North station. A 911 call at about 8:40 p.m. reported a possible medical issue with a man who was slumped over behind the wheel of his car. Police found Kowalski at the wheel with the key in the ignition and the engine running. Officers spoke with him and detected the smell of alcohol and found that he had slurred speech, red and glassy eyes and was disoriented. After failing a field sobriety test, Kowalski was arrested. He posted $250 bond and is scheduled to appear June 6 in Norwalk Superior Court.

• Daniel E. Carlisle, 24, of Dundee Road, Stamford, was charged with driving under the influence and driving at an unreasonable speed after being stopped at 8:22 p.m. Thursday on Ponus Ridge Road near Wahackme Road. Carlisle was stopped after his vehicle was seen traveling faster than the posted 25 mph speed limit, police said. The officer detected the odor of alcohol and found Carlisle with slurred speech and red and glassy eyes, police said. Carlisle was released on $260 bond and is scheduled to appear June 5 in Norwalk Superior Court.
