Main Street Sidewalks Set for New Canaan Parade

NEW CANAAN, Conn.  – The sidewalks are in place and Main Street will be ready for New Canaan’s annual Memorial Day parade.

The goal of having the southern end of the town’s main thoroughfare ready for the big parade will be realized, Public Works Director Mike Pastore said Thursday. The town began adding sidewalks to the west side of Main Street between Farm Road and Cherry Street last March. The paving will be completed to Lakeview Avenue, the end point of the parade. The remainder of the paving will be completed the following week, he said.

Pastore said the repaving work would have been finished earlier this week, but heavy rain earlier in the week postponed the work. “If the weather is good, we should be able to do it,” he said. “The last two days, the rain made it difficult.”

The sidewalk installation, a bone of contention for several years, was approved last year as part of a $4 million road renovation project. Proponents of the sidewalks say it will make Main Street safer and encourage more residents to walk and be healthy. Opponents said the town should hold off and work on road repairs instead.
