Knapp will step down in January from her position leading New Canaan’s only library to take over as director of user services at the Ferguson Library.
The new job will also have her leading the Stamford library’s initiative for the next five-year strategic plan.
"Well, it was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up,” said Knapp, whose last day is Jan. 13, 2013. “It was a hard decision because New Canaan is a wonderful community and the staff is wonderful, talented and creative. But this is an opportunity that would not be around a year or two years from now.”
Knapp joined the New Canaan Library in October 2008, replacing David Bryant. She has since worked on various projects, including adding to the library’s collection of electronic materials, adding 23 new parking spaces and developing plans for the library’s long-awaited renovation and expansion project.
She’s also seen how the library became a gathering place and work center for residents after recent power outages caused by hurricanes and snowstorms. The library expanded its Wi-fi capability to accommodate the growing number of users.
“There’s a lot that we’ve done in the last four years and I can’t take credit for all of that,” Knapp said. “We have an amazing staff and the board who worked so hard on many of projects and we have a great relationship with the town.”
Knapp expects to be plenty busy on her final day as there will be a Notes In Midwinter concert and an open house to celebrate an anniversary of the laying of a library cornerstone. “It’s sort of fitting that I’m leaving on a busy day,” she said.
Susan LaPerla, the library’s director of programming, and Anne Romanello, the director of finance and administration, will serve as co-directors until a new executive director is hired.
