Jonathan Weed Tweedy, 53, a native of Darien and resident of New York, died May 24, after a lengthy battle against myelofibrosis. He died at New York Presbyterian Hospital from complications after a stem-cell transplant.
Born on June 10, 1957, at Stamford Hospital, Tweedy was the son of the late Richard and Louise Tweedy. He attended Darien schools and Phillips Andover Academy before graduating from Yale University in 1979.
Tweedy co-owned Lindners Cycle Shop, a BMW motorcycle dealership in New Canaan in the 1990s. During those years, he and his friends enjoyed motorcycle trips across the United States as well as Europe.
He was a talented musician, a natural athlete and, most notably, a sparkling intellect. He had a gift of interpersonal connection and charm that attracted scores of friends. In addition to his love for the piano, Tweedy sang in several choirs, played the guitar and was learning to play the viola. Between college and graduate school, he played in a band in California.
He earned a masters degree in engineering and then a law degree, both from Columbia University. He then clerked for the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Little Rock, Ark., where he filled his free time there learning to fly, writing his family history and polishing his golf game.
His next business venture was creating five upscale pizza restaurants with a partner in New York City. He proudly opened the fifth, Tappo, the day before entering the hospital for his stem-cell transplant. He lived in the City but also had a home in Millbrook, N.Y., where he created an organic farm to supply the restaurants.
Tweedy is survived by his brother, David, and his wife, Ellie Tweedy, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his brother, Burr, of Cambridge, Mass.; his brother, Jim, and his wife, Meg Tweedy, of Darien; his stepmother, Joan Tweedy, of Darien; his stepbrother, Philip, and his wife, Lucy Hann Livingston, of New York City; his stepbrother, Chico, and his wife, Lynne Livingston, of Santa Fe, N.M.; his stepsister, Patty Livingston, and her husband, Tom Gottsleben, of Saugerties, N.Y.; his stepsister, Millie Livingston of Seattle; and two nieces, two nephews and nine step-nieces and step-nephews. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Robin Tweedy.
A memorial will be held at a date yet to be determined. For details, email tweedy108@aol.com.
