How New Canaan Senior Copped a Prom Date

The police cruiser pulling up behind her car with flashing lights gave Lauren Wilcox a start. “I was shocked. I was shaking,” said Wilcox, 17, a senior at New Canaan High School. “My heart was racing.”

Lauren had just arrived in the parking lot of Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee on Pine Street. New Canaan Police Youth Officer Sgt. Carol Ogrinc approached to tell her there had been drug activity in the area and that a vehicle resembling Wilcox’s might have been involved.

After asking Lauren for her license, Ogrinc stepped away and a nicely dressed John Church approached the car window.

“I said, ‘before you get arrested, will you go to the prom with me?’” John, also 17 and a senior at NCHS recalled. “She was kind of mad and she said ‘that’s not funny.’ But her friends said she liked it.”

Lauren did have a sense of humor about it and eventually said yes, bringing cheers from her friends, who were watching. “I was happy,” she said, giving John a 9.5 for inventiveness.

Ogrinc said she was happy to help John in his prom quest. “I enjoyed it and he’s a great kid,” said Ogrinc, who also loved Lauren's reaction.

With his date locked up, John only had to spend Thursday preparing for Friday's big day, including getting his tuxedo. The smooth black suit complemented him well at last year’s junior prom and he’s expecting to look just as nice this year. “I thought I looked like James Bond,” he said.
