Forum To Discuss Library's Future

New Canaan Library officials will host a discussion Sunday on the library's future and the results of a community survey.

Library director Alice Knapp said the forum will update residents on the process of creating a new facility. The library's directors will also share the results of a survey taken last summer on library use.

"What we will be doing on Sunday is sort of talking about where we are in the process," Knapp said. "We're still very much into the giving and receiving of information, a lot more receiving than giving information."

The meeting is set for 1:30 p.m. at the library on Main Street. According to the survey, 67 percent of the 404 respondents use the library on a daily or weekly basis, 92 percent of users borrow print and audio books, 63 percent borrow DVDs or films, 63 percent browse library collections and 45 percent do research and use the library's computers.

Knapp says the survey, created as part of a 21st Century New Canaan Library strategic plan, confirms that people love and support the library and use it for many things, but also see the need for improvements.

"Our stated goal is we would like a new facility for the library, but in order to do a new facility and make it right for the community, we really need a lot of input from New Canaan," she said.

Many townspeople have questions about the library's future, especially with town officials exploring a master plan for downtown buildings like Town Hall and the New Canaan Fire Department. Knapp said the meeting serves as another chance to listen to the public.

"This is an open process and we want peoples' feedback on what features they'd like in a 21st century library facility," she said.
