Five Appointed to New Canaan Finance Board

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Three veterans of town government and two newcomers will join the Board of Finance just before town officials begin preparing the 2012-13 fiscal year budget.

Former First Selectman Judy Neville headlines a group of five who will take seats on the finance board after being approved during a special Town Council meeting Thursday.

Neville and veteran finance board member Mary Davis Cody were appointed to four-year terms as regular members. Board of Education Chairwoman Sally Hines, a former selectman, was approved for a two-year term as an alternate. Residents John Sheffield and John “Buzz” Kanter will also serve as alternates. The appointments became official after nearly 90 minutes of interviews and discussion.

Neville joins the board for a four-year term, taking over for Susan LaPerla. Neville served as the town’s top elected officer from 2003 to 2007. First Selectman Rob Mallozzi III said recently that he selected Neville because he wanted to add someone with experience to the finance board. By charter, the first selectman is also the chair of the finance board.

Cody will begin her third full term. She was appointed by Neville and began serving on the finance board in the beginning of 2004. Hines served as a selectman for four years before opting not to seek another term to go into educational consulting.

Most council members were pleased with the process Thursday. Town Council Chairman Mark DeWaele welcomed the members, telling them to “roll up your sleeves” for the start of the budget process.
