Firefighters Stop Blaze Quickly

Quick action by the New Canaan Fire Department prevented a house fire from becoming a tragedy Monday morning. At about 5:58 a.m., residents at 182 Wahackme Road called the department to report a fire on the roof of the home. Fire Chief Edward Karl told reporters that firefighters contained the blaze by 6:26 a.m.

Firefighters were able to limit the fire's damage to the home's attic, on the third story. Nobody was hurt in the incident. Fire Marshal Fred Baker said the family was already outside by the time first responders arrived. "They did the right thing," Baker said. "They smelled smoke, and once they confirmed there was a little smoke they called right away." But the fire still spread through the roof's wood shingles and supports, leaving a hole about 10 feet in diameter. Baker is still investigating the cause of the fire, but said it was "definitely accidental. No question about it."
