Emilio J. 'Mel' DeAsi, 88, of New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Emilio J. DeAsi of New Canaan died on Jan. 11 at his home. He was 88 years old.

DeAsi served in World War II as a member of the Army's 873rd Engineer Aviation Battalion, constructing airfields throughout the Asian Pacific. He was stationed in Greensboro, N.C., for basic training, then deployed to Bora Bora and 13 other locations, including Guadalcanal, the Philippines, Mindanao, Okinawa and Japan. 

He worked for the New Haven Railroad for many years, then in lumber sales and building estimating for New Canaan Fuel and Lumber. He retired from Rings End at age 65.

His lifelong passion was art. He studied at Ridgefield Art Center and attended Waveny Art classes regularly for many years. He also loved to spend time with his family and attend annual Army reunions.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sandra Mazzella DeAsi; three children, Gary DeAsi and his wife, Lisa, of Duxbury, Mass., Lynn Ordnung and her husband, Eric, of Asheville, N.C., and Dawn Dursee of Westfield, N.J., and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan. There are no calling hours. Hoyt Funeral Home of New Canaan is in charge of arrangements.
