DUI Stop is New Canaan's First Bust of New Year

NEW CANAAN, Conn.  – A Weston man became the first person to be arrested by New Canaan Police in the new year. He was charged with driving under the influence. 

Timothy C. Head, 59, of Old Easton Turnpike, was pulled over at about 12:53 a.m. Sunday on Silvermine Road near Little Brook Road. Police said he was driving above the posted 30 mph limit. While speaking with Head, police said they noted signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and not answering questions directly. Police conducted a field sobriety test and then arrested Head.

Head was released on $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Jan. 12.

In other police news:

• A 15-year-old New Canaan boy was charged with third-degree assault after a dispute with his mother. Police said the mother and son got into an argument Dec. 27. The argument resumed the next day at the mother’s workplace and escalated, police said. The boy became angry and struck his mother in the face at least two times with his closed hand, police said. The teen was referred to juvenile court in Stamford. Police did not release the boy’s name because of his age.

• Police were investigating an incident in which a New Canaan man’s Social Security number was used in an attempt to open bank accounts. Police said a 20-year-old Woods End Road resident reported Dec. 28 that someone tried to open accounts at eight banks using his Social Security information. Police said the man received a call from one of his banks to alert him. 

• Jonathan Avery, 20, of Ponus Ridge Road, was arrested last Thursday and charged with driving at unreasonable speed, possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of alcohol by a minor. Police said Avery was pulled over on Main Street after officers saw him driving at a high rate of speed. Officers said they saw a bottle of liquor in the rear pocket of a car seat. They also detected the odor of marijuana in the car and saw a pipe with marijuana residue and a marijuana cigarette. All the charges are violations.
