NEW CANAAN, Conn. A South Salem, N.Y., woman charged with hitting an elderly bicyclist with her car two years ago and leaving the scene received probation and must perform community service after pleading guilty to evading responsibility.
Margaret McDonald was sentenced Tuesday in Norwalk Superior Court to a suspended one-year jail sentence and three years of probation, according to her attorney Matthew McDonald. As part of her sentence, McDonald must perform 300 hours of community service.
New Canaan police arrested McDonald after she turned herself in to police in August 2010. Police said she was driving on Oenoke Ridge Road on May 21, 2010, when she struck Thomas Scheuer while he was riding his bicycle on the side of the road. A passing jogger found Scheuer unconscious later that morning. Scheuer was taken to Stamford Hospital with head, leg and internal injuries.
McDonald is intensely remorseful for what happened nearly two years ago, Maddox said, but is relieved to have the case concluded and is trying to move on and make amends.
Maddox said he had an ongoing dialogue with Scheuers attorney, Fred Ury, as the case proceeded.
