The highlights of the day included the Dogs and Divas Fashion Parade, which even had some of the dogs wearing the latest fashions, the Wag Away Dog contest, which was won by Splash and the rest of Kallins Family, and the Smoochin’ With You Pooch Best Kiss Contest, which Avery Bowling won with her miniature Australian cattle dog Petie.
“Having a pet is fun,” Shirleen Dubuque, owner of Village Critter Outfitter, a sponsor and organizer of the event, said explaining that she and the other organizers wanted everyone—dogs and people—to enjoy themselves.
While the day is meant to be entertaining for dogs and their owners, it also serves as a fundraiser for Pet Animal Welfare Society, a Norwalk-based organization that works to provide homes for dogs and cats. Dubuque explained that she hopes the Dog Days Festival raises awareness as well as support to what the organization does.
“Our philosophy is to promote the whole wellness of the animal,” she said.
The Pet Animal Welfare Society and other organizations serving pets such as Bully Breed Rescue and Camp Bow Wow had booths set up to introduce their services to the community. The New Canaaan Police Department also had a booth raising funds for its K-9 unit.
