Decay Forces Bridge Repairs

Crumbling bridges have caught the attention of the Department of Public Works. The town is making repairs to the bridge at Old Norwalk Road and has plans to fix at least three others, says Public Works Director Michael Pastore.

Construction equipment fills one of the two lanes at the Old Norwalk Road bridge and traffic lights at either end of the crossing are toggled so only one direction of traffic can cross at a time. The work became necessary when deteriorating concrete and steel raised safety concerns. Similar issues are present at bridges on Huckleberry, Wahackme and Mariomi roads.

Bridges at Mariomi, Hickock and Jelliff Mill roads are also dealing with "potential scour" where high water flow may wash out a center pier, Pastore said. The Public Works Department will make repairs to two culverts under Ponus Ridge.

Pastore anticipates all the repairs will cost about $10.5 million. Factoring in state Department of Transportation assistance, the town will only have to pay $3.725 million, he said. He did not indicate when all the repair work would be finished.
