Cops Find Burglary Loot in Suspect's Car

A Norwalk man accused of stealing jewelry, power tools and electronics from homes in the southwestern portion of town Monday was held on $100,000 bond after his arrest, Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said at a Tuesday evening news conference.

Dominick V. Sciarretta, 23, of 20 Juhasz Road, was charged with two counts of third-degree burglary, second-degree larceny, third-degree larceny, three counts of sixth-degree larceny and second-degree criminal attempt at burglary after taking an assortment of items from homes and mailboxes, police said.

Ogrinc said Sciarretta began his spree by stealing a DVD movie from a mailbox of a Spring Water Lane home. Police said he went on to steal jewelry and electronics from a home on Adams Lane. Tools were removed from a Ponus Ridge home as it was being repaired. Police said electronics were taken from a home on Jelliff Mill Road, and jewelry was removed from a mailbox on Running Brook Lane.

Ogrinc said several people reported the burglaries and provided descriptions. One resident got the license plate of Sciarretta's red 2000 Honda Accord. "That was really instrumental in finding him," Ogrinc said.

Police executed a search warrant at Sciarretta's home Tuesday and found the items reported stolen in his car. He was arrested at his home and taken into custody. Ogrinc said Tuesday that police did not have a motive. "It seemed like he picked an area. I don't know what his motive was other than to get property to probably exchange for cash," she said. "He was just opportunistic."

Police said it appeared Sciarretta had committed similar burglaries in other towns. Further charges are pending in New Canaan and in Darien, Ogrinc said.

Sciarretta is scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. today in Norwalk Superior Court.
