Bridge Work Nears Halfway Point

It's not quite the Bridge on the River Kwai, but the Old Norwalk Road bridge over the Five Mile River seems to have assumed equally epic proportions. But motorists delayed by alternating one-way traffic as the span has been repaired will be happy to know the project is reaching the halfway point, according to foreman Doug Brown of New England Road, the project contractor.

"We're doing the last couple of concrete pours, then we can move the barriers and begin work on the other side," said Brown. "That side is a little trickier since there's a water main that needs to be relocated, but we've done all the work below the bridge in the river, so we won't need to do that on that side."

Brown said good weather this summer has helped get the rebuilding back on schedule. Barring unforeseen setbacks, he expect the bridge will open to two-way traffic on time, just before the holidays. That will be a greatly appreciated gift to motorists -- maybe enough for them to whistle the "Colonel Bogey March" as they drive across.
