Bad Checks Land Man In Jail

Talk about a bad deal: Silver worth less than $1,300 ended up costing Keith D. Chemlen of Oxford at least $7,500 — and jail time. Police served Chemlen, 32, a pair of warrants last week for writing bad checks in June. According to the New Canaan police, Chemlen bought a silver serving set valued at $557 from The Silk Purse on Main Street on June 16. Later that day, he bought sterling silver bowls and a creamer, totaling $726, from Severed Ties on Cherry Street.

Chemlen wrote checks for both purchases. When the stores tried to cash them, the bank informed them the account had been closed. After several attempts to contact Chemlen, the Silk Purse and Severed Ties filed charges. Police caught up with Chemlen at Norwalk Superior court Friday, where he was scheduled to appear for a hearing on charges from another town. They set bond at $5,000 for the first charge and $2,500 for the second, both of which he could not pay. He was arraigned the same day.

Also from the police blotter:

If Wendylee Haslam of Trumbull had stolen two license plates instead of one, she might have gotten away with it.

Haslam, 42, was driving south on New Norwalk Road last week when a New Canaan officer noticed her car did not have a front license plate. When the officer stopped her, he ran her plate and discovered it had been reported stolen from a vehicle in Milford. Police charged Haslam with operating an unregistered vehicle, larceny, misuse of a license plate, failure to display registration and driving without insurance. She posted $50 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 16.
