Arrest Made in New Canaan Car Break-in

A Bronx, N.Y., man who allegedly broke into a parked car at Saxe Middle School last October and stole a purse with money and credit cards was arrested last Tuesday by New Canaan Police.

Charles Mills, 40, of Grand Concourse, was charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny after he turned himself in.

Police said Mills was seen on surveillance tape at about 1 p.m. on Oct. 1 getting out of a white BMW and breaking into a car parked in front of the school. Police said Mills broke the passenger side window and stole a Louis Vuitton purse, a black Prada wallet, about $500 in cash and several credit cards. Police said they were unable to make an arrest last year because they could not identify the license plate number on the video. Two weeks ago they got word from the White Plains Police that a similar robbery, pulled off by a man matching Mills’ description, had taken place there. Greenwich Police also identified him as a suspect in a car break-in. Police obtained cell phone records and were able to place Mills in the area of Saxe Middle School during the October break-in.

Police said Mills also had warrants from Darien and Fairfield for probation violations. Mills was released on his New Canaan charges after posting $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on April 4.eHH He posted $10,000 bond for his Fairfield charges and must appear April 5 in Bridgeport Superior Court. He was released on a promise to appear for his Darien charges and is due in Stamford Superior Court on April 6.
