Three local stores were found in violation of state rules against selling tobacco products to minors. Police said the Vegetable Barn at 22 Cross St., the Mobil gas station at 16 South Ave. and MacKenzie's at 7 South Ave. failed compliance checks conducted Thursday by police and officials from the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. The seller in each violating store was issued an infraction summons for illegal sale of tobacco to a minor.
Police said the agencies conducted the unannounced checks Thursday at nine establishments. The inspections were performed in an effort to determine compliance with state laws concerning the prohibition on selling cigarettes and tobacco products to people younger than 18.
Police said state officials would follow up with the owners of the stores in violation. Six other stores were in compliance: Food Emporium at 280 Elm St., A&P Liquors at 282 Elm St., Walgreen's at 36 Pine St., CVS at 94 Park St., Stewart's Spirits at 227 Elm St. and the Gulf gas station at 36 South Ave.
