Waveny Care Uses Grant for New Minivan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Waveny Care Network recently received a substantial grant from the New Canaan Community Foundation to replace the adult day program's 10 year-old mini-van with a 2011 Chevy Traverse from Karl Chevrolet.

The adult day program provide medical and other types of assistance to seniors still living at home. Typically, the daily program accommodates 35 to 40 people from New Canaan and surrounding Fairfield County communities and relies heavily on its fleet of vehicles.

"If not for Waveny's provided transportation to and from the surrounding areas, many of our program participants would be unable to attend the program due to family or caregiver constraints and conflicts," said Ilene Sumberg, director of the adult day program. "Our old and worn 10 year-old van registered 112,700 miles and its required maintenance and repair expenses were beginning to outweigh the cost of replacing the vehicle."

Donations from Dionne Fund and the Rein Family Fund helped pay for the new SUV.

"We are very grateful that Karl Chevrolet helped to make this terrific car affordable so our donor dollars had the greatest impact," said Cynthia Gorey, executive director of The New Canaan Community Foundation. "This story is a perfect example of community philanthropy – local people giving together to make an impact."
